Neurodiversity-Aware Therapy™

A neurodiversity-affirming approach to counselling that supports autistic adults, adults with ADHD, and other neurodivergent people navigating burnout, masking, relationships, identity, and emotional wellbeing.
Neurodiversity-Aware Therapy™ is an approach to counselling specially designed for autistic adults, adults with ADHD and/or OCD and other neurodivergent adults. We support clients who are navigating masking, burnout, relationships, self-understanding, overwhelm, workplace challenges, and the long-term effects of being misunderstood. Our therapists aim to offer care that is affirming, practical, and responsive to how neurodivergent lives are actually lived.
What is Neurodiversity Aware Therapy™?
Neurodiversity-Aware Therapy™ is a counselling approach designed to support neurodivergent people without forcing them into norms that do not fit. Rather than treating difference as dysfunction, this approach starts from the understanding that autistic and ADHD ways of thinking, feeling, sensing, communicating, and relating are meaningful forms of human variation.

In practice, that means therapy supports clients to understand themselves, reduce harm, build sustainable lives, strengthen relationships, and make choices that fit their actual needs.

Our work may include support around nervous system overload, masking, identity development, emotional regulation, self-trust, communication, boundaries, trauma, grief, or the mismatch between a person and their environment.

Common reasons people come to us
  • Neurodivergent burnout: support for exhaustion, loss of capacity, reduced functioning, and the long recovery that can follow prolonged stress and masking.
  • Masking and identity: space to explore who you are beneath performance, adaptation, and survival strategies.
  • Relationships: help navigating communication differences, emotional disconnection, conflict, boundaries, and neurodivergent-neurotypical mismatches.
  • Work and life stress: support for overwhelm, accommodation issues, shutdown cycles, fatigue, and the pressure to keep up in environments that do not fit.

How this approach may feel different

Many neurodivergent adults have had therapy experiences that felt misattuned, pathologizing, too abstract, too behaviour-focused, or insufficiently responsive to sensory, cognitive, and relational differences. Neurodiversity-Aware Therapy™ aims to be different. Depending on the therapist and the client’s needs, therapy may involve:

  • adapting pace and communication style
  • making room for directness, reflection, or processing time
  • recognizing sensory and nervous system realities
  • understanding masking as an effortful adaptation rather than a simple social skill
  • exploring environmental fit instead of locating every problem inside the person
  • supporting self-knowledge rather than pushing conformity
The goal of Neurodiversity Aware Therapy™ is not to force people into a narrow idea of functioning, but to help them move toward greater clarity, stability, agency, and well-being.
