Empowering Neurodiversity Together

Our Mission
To Empower Neurodivergent People
Neurodiversity Aware Counselling is dedicated to empowering neurodivergent individuals through tailored, Neurodiversity-Aware Therapy™, a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and identity-affirming approach that focuses on enhancing self-awareness and building resilience so that clients can navigate their life journeys with confidence.
To Create Better Outcomes for Neurodivergent People Everywhere
Our mission extends beyond individual therapy to workplace orientations and counsellor training to create better environments and opportunities for neurodivergent people everywhere. We also support people with low incomes by connecting them with counselling interns trained in level 1 Neurodiversity Aware Therapy.
To Create New Opportunities for Supporting Neurodivergent People
At Neurodiversity Aware Counselling, we believe that research is an important part of understanding what will be most supportive for neurodivergent clients. With this in mind, we support, read, and engage in research to provide new opportunities to more powerfully affirm neurodivergence.
Neurodiversity isn't just an idea, it's a community
We aim to create networks of support for neurodivergent people everywhere, starting in North America
Neurodiversity Aware Counselling
A central, organizational goal of Neurodiversity Aware Counselling is to align greater self-advocacy with positive client outcomes. Ultimately, we hope that advocacy will lead to more neurodiversity awareness throughout society, creating better environments for all neurodivergent people. Putting clients first, we also aim to delicately balance self-advocacy with the realities of discrimination in a world that still has some growing to do. It is our belief that, together, we are a stronger force for positive change.
Neurodiversity Research
Recent studies in the field of neurodiversity and autism are leaning toward lived experience as a source of research data. Older studies used pathologizing lenses, which is to say that they interpreted any difference in neurodivergent people as being a horrible problem that needed correction. In contrast, when neurodivergent people communicate their own lived experience - and are involved in doing the research themselves - the conclusions of that research are more likely to be accurate and compassionate to neurodivergent perspectives. At Neurodiversity Aware Counselling, we are sensitive to this fact, and engage in purely neurodiversity-affirming approaches to research.
More than just therapy
Neurodiversity Aware Counselling is also working toward creating greater awareness in school systems and workspaces. Our efforts have included providing neurodiversity workplace training and orientation to organizations, consulting with schools to provide better outcomes for neurodivergent teachers and students, and supporting neurodiversity-affirming efforts in the third world.
